Turda Salt Mine

Visitor rating:

About it

A trip to Turda Salt Mine is a must for any visitor traveling to Cluj region in Transylvania. One of the most important salt mines in Transylvania, Salina Turda has been known since ancient times, but was put into operation for underground mining work during the Roman period. Then, the mines were lit by candles and tallow rush lights;

The microclimate in the mine is characterised by yearly variations of temperature between 11 - 12° C; the average humidity level inside is 80% and the air pressure is between 747-752 mm Hg. The lack of pathogen bacterium and a moderate air ionisation is therefore favorable to breathing treatments.
By its impressive galleries, long tunnels and mining system, great accoustics and very healthy microclimate, Turda Salt Mine is an excellent destination for every tourist.

About it

Bran Castle, situated in Bran and very close to Brasov, is a national monument and landmark in Romania, and a place that must be visited by tourists. The fortress is situated on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia, on DN73. Commonly known as "Dracula's Castle" (although it is one among several locations linked to the Dracula legend, including Poienari Castle and Hunyad Castle), it is marketed as the home of the titular character in Bram Stoker's Dracula. There is, however, no evidence that Stoker knew anything about this castle. Furthermore, there are persistent myths that it was once the home of Vlad Tepes, ruler of Wallachia. This is not true. The historical person Vlad III never resided there.

The castle is a museum daily open for tourists, displaying art and furniture collected by Queen Maria. Tourists can see the interior individually or by a guided tour. At the bottom of the hill is a small open air museum park exhibiting traditional Romanian peasant structures (cottages, barns, etc.) from across the country.

About it

Gothic style castle built on roman ruins in 14th century. Vlad Tepes (well known as Dracula) was imprisoned here during his youth for 7 years. This castle is a solid rock fortress fiercely built by Turkish prisoners. It holds 3 huge defense towers, a drawbridge and high battlements, 5 marble columns with delicate ribbed vaults support two halls, and Knight's Hall. 50 rooms today houses a feudal art museum. It served as a fortress until mid of 14th century, when it became the residence of Transylvania's ruler, Iancu de Hunedoara. Iancu refurnished the fortress and it soon became known as the most beautiful castle in Transylvania. Balea Lake

Visitor rating:

About it

A winter experience not to be missed! If you get the chance go and try this place out, and you will not regret it. It is a very clean resort, at an altitude of 2,034 meters. Be prepared for it to be very cold and don't expect plush surroundings. There are breathtaking views that you've never seen before. Food is good: activities are weather dependent and the toilet arrangements are not the most convenient (especially at night) that aside it really is a must do and these features are all part of the fantastic experience that awaits you; you can also party all night if you want to!
Our party had an amazing time aided by our great tour rep from untravelled paths.
Go prepared - Ski wear, sunglasses and snow boots and don't forget the camera!

About it

Why visit the Danube Delta when traveling to Romania? The Danube delta hosts over 300 species of birds as well as 45 freshwater fish species in its numerous lakes and marshes. Isn't this a sufficient reason? The Danube Delta (in Romanian "Delta Dunarii") is the second largest delta in Europe, after the Volga Delta, and is the best preserved on the continent! Now this should be sufficient reason to make you want to explore its approximate surface of 4152 km², of which 3446 km² are in Romania.

Visit the only ice church in Romania!

Visitor rating:

Two British couples will be the first to get married in the ice church which is being built at over 2,000 meters altitude in the Fagaras Mountains. The construction will be located near the only ice hotel in Romania which was opened on December 25.

The ice church is built entirely from ice bricks which are being cut from the Balea Lake, following the design of an old church from the Malancrav village in Sibiu where Great Britain’s Prince Charles has a residence.

The project will cover 100 sqm and it will be able to host up to 50 people at the same time. It should be completed in tha second half of January.

Anyone can visit the church free of charge. Several public ceremonies will be organized here and those interested can rent the place for private events such as weddings.

Tourists spend New Year’s holidays at ice hotel

The first Hotel of Ice was built in 2006 and at the time, it was the only such construction in Southeast Europe. The tourism marketing project for the Hotel of Ice was initiated by Arnold G. Klingeis.

The hotel has proved a popular destination for Christmas and New Year’ parties ever since. Hundreds of foreign and local tourists visit the site each winter.

This year 16 British tourists chose to spend their Christmas in the hotel. The guests experienced and icy sejour and welcomed the New Year with a "cold" party, where cocktails were served in ice glasses and food on ice plates.

A single room in the Ice Hotel costs RON 150 per person (about EUR 35), while a double room will cost RON 300 (around EUR 70). The hotel which is entirely made out of ice and snow features 10 rooms, a bar, a restaurant, a lobby and 3 igloos.

In order to reach the Hotel of Ice, one would have to drive to the Balea Cascade and from there, take the cable car to Balea Lake.
